Blue Streak Food Company-Lisa Long
"My name is Lisa Long and I am a Special Education Teacher at Harrisonburg High School. Our curriculum is based on functional academic and life skills designed to make our students as independent as possible within the limits of their disabilities. We work hard on providing real life experiences where they can learn to interact with their peers and adults. A dilemma we have is trying to do community based instruction on a very limited budget. Community outings, grocery shopping, meal preparation, and consumer skills all require money to make the experience real.
Our new project is called The Blue Streak Food Company. We voted as a group on our name and product. We want to make meals or desserts for teachers and staff to purchase and take home for dinner after working all day. This would provide community based instruction on meal planning, meal preparation, shopping for groceries, paying for groceries, and learning how to work in a kitchen. Our idea would be to select a casserole, or dessert that we can prepare in our classroom kitchen and sell to the staff. My students would be responsible for picking a recipe, making a shopping list, going to the grocery store to purchase items, following a recipe to prepare the meal, and deliver and collect money from the staff. This would give my students the opportunity to handle real money and learn communication skills while interacting with the staff.
We hope to also invite Regular Education students from the Foods Classes who could work cooperatively with the students, teaching them kitchen techniques, developing friendships, modeling good behavior, and providing opportunities for interaction with their peers that may not normally occur in the school day.
The students are excited to start our new adventure as The Blue Streak Food Company. They have brainstormed recipes they would like to try and are ready to impress our staff!
Thank you for this opportunity!"
The Greg Kuykendall Memorial Scholarship Fund
Greg graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1985 and was a talented athlete and scholar. He went on to attend the University of Virginia where he earned a bachelors and masters degree. Greg was an enthusiastic alumnus.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to a scholarship established in Greg's name at HHS.
The family intends the scholarship to be awarded to a HHS student-athlete who has demonstrated strong character, team-play, and sportsmanship during his high school career.
The student-athlete is not necessarily the best athlete but rather is known for consistently doing the right things and who has displayed, during his or her high school career, the attributes of strong character, team-play and sportsmanship that Greg displayed and valued so much in his life.
