Support the HCPS Clothes Closet

The new Welcome Center Clothes Closet allows our Harrisonburg City School teachers, counselors, school nurses and social workers to supply students with the clothes they need easily and efficiently.  Over the years, school employees have utilized too much of their own time and personal resources to collect and provide clothes to children in need.

The Clothes Closet at the Welcome Center is a non-public resource for school personnel to utilize on behalf of students, stocked and maintained by community volunteers.  School personnel will make requests electronically on behalf of the children they are assisting.  These volunteers will pull the requested items from the Clothes Closet and ensure the items are delivered to the child’s school.  The time of our Social Workers needs to be protected, ensuring they prioritize their expertise to combat the greatest challenges vulnerable families are facing.  Clothing for these students is absolutely essential but this need can be met by community volunteers.  Let’s protect the time of our city school professionals to do the jobs only they can do, with volunteers supplying students with the clothes they need.

Become a Clothes Closet Volunteer!  We need volunteers to maintain the Clothes Closet on a regular basis.  This includes a once-monthly sorting and restocking of clothes, swapping out seasonally appropriate items and general organization of the space.  Twice monthly, volunteers will come and “fill orders” from school personnel on behalf of the children that need clothing assistance.  Volunteer service hours will be during open Welcome Center hours.

Donate new underwear and socks!  The Clothes Closet is currently accepting donations of new socks and underwear, which can be prohibitively expensive for financially struggling families.  All male and female sizes are needed and accepted, from size 6 through adult.  Child underwear sizes of 6-8 are in particularly high need in the elementary schools, along with young women’s adult sizes needed in the middle and high schools.  Drop off your donated items in the Welcome Center during their open hours:  Monday - Friday between 8:00AM and 4:00PM. The Welcome Center/Family Resource Center is located at 640 South Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
